Beechdean Motorsport, fresh from their success of last year and their win at the final British GT race of 2011 in the DBRS9, will remain loyal to the iconic legend that is Aston Martin. The team have big plans for 2012, and all the action will be based around the new V12 Vantage GT3.

Unleashed at Brands Hatch testing last week the Vantage certainly made its mark! Aggressive in looks, stable in handling and ferociously quick in the corners – this machine spearheads the next generation of Aston Martin Racing cars. GT1 and GT2 technology is harnessed to produce a serious, brutal contender in GT3.

As the sole Vantage competing in the British GT Championship Beechdean Motor Racing this year benefits from manufacturer support. Progress will take place throughout the series as Aston Martin Racing develop the car from race to race. Beechdean team boss Andrew Howard “The handling is phenomenal. The whole aim is to push the car forward. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Jonny and me to be involved with the next generation of GT3 Aston.” The V12 Vantage GT3 is sure to make a big noise this season draped in the Union Jack. The mission for British driving duo Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam is to take this British brute to British GT glory.

The Beechdean Motorsport Team duo of Jonathan Adam and Andrew Howard took the victory in the final race of the British GT Championship season at Silverstone.

For the pairing of Adam and Howard it was a second win of the season after also triumphing at Rockingham in September, and the stunning result rounded off a strong run in to the end of the 2011 season for the Beechdean outfit.

The weekend had got off to the best possible start with Adam placing the Aston Martin on pole position in qualifying, but the Adam/Howard partnership didn’t have it all their own way come race day.

Joe Osborne of United Autosports took the initiative, with Beechdean’s Andrew Howard having a tough start but recovering to claim third place.

Having taken over from Howard and pitted during a safety car period Jonathan Adam was sitting in fourth place at the restart, but quickly cut his way through the field and took the lead ahead of Zak Brown and Richard Westbrook who were close behind.

However, Brown and Westbrook were more concerned about beating each other to second place, which left Adam unchallenged at the head of the field to cruise over the finishing line over 20seconds ahead of his nearest challenger and claim a comfortable second win of the season for Beechdean Motorsport.

Despite being one of the older models in the British GT field the Beechdean Aston Martin enjoyed a fine farewell season in the hands of Adam and Howard, with the combination of car and drivers getting stronger and stronger as the championship progressed.

A haul of two wins and two further podium places in 2011 was testament to how quickly Adam adapted to a GT car in his maiden endurance racing season, and having gained valuable experience the Fife-based driver will be keen to further establish his credentials in 2012.
Jonny said:
“We had a testing session at Silverstone earlier in the year that went very well, so we were quietly confident that we’d do well before the race. It was quite nice to win because it was the last race of the season, so we finished on a high, and it was also the last race in that car because it’s a bit older than most of the cars out there so it’s difficult to keep up. This win will definitely give us a lot of confidence going into next season. I’ve really enjoyed my first year in the British GT championship and I’m looking forward to seeing if we can build on this for 2012.”

Jonny has taken a significant step towards returning to the British Touring Car Championship, possibly at Knockhill in September, after successfully completing a test with Airwaves Racing at Brands Hatch. Jonny piloted the Motorbase BMW in the 2009 season, drove the Airwaves-sponsored Ford Focus at the Kent circuit and admitted to being impressed by the package. “It was nice to get back into front-wheel drive, because that’s where I came from with Seats and Clios,” Jonny explained. “I jumped in and felt instantly comfortable in the car; and Fords have always had fantastic chassis. The engine’s brilliant. “We’re trying to get the sponsorship to make it move forward. I’d say we’re about 50:50 at the moment, which in this financial climate isn’t a bad place to be. There’s no question the fantastic live TV coverage on ITV definitely makes it very attractive from a sponsors’ perspective.” And while the talented Scot would dearly love to contest the whole of the second half of the BTCC season, he admits the initial budget might not stretch to that. “Any agreement might just be for selected races,” Adam, who will join fellow Scot Gordon Shedden on the BTCC grid, continued. “But we’re definitely exploring ways to get me back in the car.
“Obviously the big attraction would be getting back on the BTCC grid at Knockhill. It’s a track I know really well, from all the driver-coaching and racing I’ve done, and it would be great to get back into a BTCC seat.” Airwaves Racing currently runs two cars, one for Liam Griffin and the other for Mat Jackson who currently lies second overall in the BTCC title race and is the leading Independent. Now though the team has just completed building a third Focus. “It’s just sitting there and the team would like to get it out on to the track as soon as possible,” Adam explained. “Because the car was just rebuilt, my outing was both a shakedown and a test. But the day ended up going very well. “There’s a lot of the guys who worked with me in 2009 are still there, which really helped me. They’ve got some really good people on the engineering front and I was impressed by just how much they’ve moved on in two years. “Now I’m working away tirelessly behind the scenes to try and get the budget in place to go racing in the BTCC again. Obviously I have commitments in the British GT Championship this year as well, but I’m sure we’ll be able to combine the two projects if we get the green light to go racing in the BTCC.”

Jonny is taking time to draw breath after his opening outings in the Beechdean Motorsport Aston Martin DBRS9 in the British GT Championship.

Partnering Andrew Howard, the 26-year-old former Seat Cupra Champion from Kirkcaldy suffered with a puncture at Snetterton then posted the second-fastest lap during his stint next time out at Brands Hatch.

But it was on his first visit to the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in belgium, scene of the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix, which brought him his best finish of the season so far.

“It was a great weekend,” Jonny explained during our ‘catch-up’. I’d never been there before, and it was tough; there were something like 59 cars on track at any one time, so it was difficult to get a clear lap.

“We qualified 10th and ninth for the two races, and finished the opening one in fifth place, which was very encouraging for us. I did the first stint in the second race and got us up to third; we then had a terrific driver-change and Andrew brought the car home in third place.

“To get a podium finish on our first visit to Spa was great both for Andrew and me, plus the whole team. Everybody worked really hard right through the weekend and it was great to have something to celebrate at the end. To walk away with a podium was excellent.”

Jonny returns to British GT action at the beginning of September when the championship heads to Rockingham in Northamptonshire.

Jonny started his Avon Tyres British GT Championship bid off with a podium place in the opening race of the season at Oulton Park. Partnered by Andrew Howard, the Beechdean Aston Martin DBR S 9, started from fifth on the grid and eventually finished third. Frustratingly for Jonny and the team, the car’s engine expired literally as he crossed the line and the car wasn’t able to take it’s place in fourth spot on the grid for the second race.
Afterwards, Jonny spoke to Jim McGill about the weekend, and how he felt — despite the disappointment of the engine problem — it had exceeded expectations. “Considering this was our first race weekend of the season, we achieved a lot more than we’d expected, despite a couple of niggling wee problems in the build-up. “I only got about 20 minutes on-track in free practice one before the car suffered a power-steering problem. It also meant Andrew didn’t get any time in the car. FP2 Andrew started the session, but we soon had to call the car back in after it suffered an ECU hiccup which caused an overheating problem. “The boys in the Beechdean team though did a super job and we were all ready in time for qualifying. We’d expected sixth or seventh, but we actually managed fifth place for both races, which was excellent.
“Andrew started the race and was lying seventh when he handed the car over to me. Unfortunately the car quickly developed a misfire and the engine dropped a cylinder midway through the race. “I had to alter my driving style to cope with the drop in power, but I managed to get passed a few people and was up to third. Over the last few laps I was hounded by the Ferrari of Allan Simonsen — he’s one of the pro drivers in the championship — but I managed to keep my head and keep him behind us.
“We crossed the line separated by just 0.401 of a second, but as soon as I took the chequered flag the engine went, literally on the line. I had to park the car at the first corner. “It’s strange, because normally the Aston Martin engine is bulletproof, but once the guys had had a chance to give it a detailed examination they discovered the engine’s been running with a problem for a couple of test session. They were gutted not to be able to repair it in time for the second race where, because another car had dropped out, we’d have started fourth. I definitely think we’d have scored another podium.
“Looking at it positively, we were very fortunate to get the third place in the race. The engine could have let go at any time. Now though we’ll turn our attention to the next round at Snetterton. Neither of us have ever driven the new layout, but from what we’ve seen I think it should suit the Aston. Oulton was the first time we’d run with the new aero package, and it’ll definitely suit Snetterton even better, so we go there confident.”
Rounds 4 and 5 of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship are at Snetterton on May 14/15.

“We tried to do BTCC but we couldn’t get the funding,” said Adam, who won on his sports car debut in 2010 at Knockhill at the wheel of a Ginetta G50 Cup car. “It’s good to be back and I’m excited to be doing British GT.
“I shouldn’t have too many problems getting used to the car. There are a lot of new cars so it will be a tough year, but I can’t see why we can’t challenge for regular podiums and finish in the top three or four in the championship.”
